Tax Credit for Replacement Windows

June 3rd, 2010

As a result of the stimulus bill, homeowners can claim a tax credit of up to $1,500 for upgrading their primary residence with energy efficient appliances and building components, such as exterior windows, doors and skylights. This way, homeowners can reduce their income tax by up to thirty percent of the purchase price (not including installation costs) of qualified products installed in 2010.  In order to qualify, windows, doors, and skylights must be accompanied with a signed statement from the manufacturer that certifies that the product complies with the tax credit criteria. Qualified windows, doors, and skylights need to have NFRC-certified U-factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) ratings that do not exceed 0.30.

New EPA Lead Rules

May 3rd, 2010

The following was taken from the EPA website at www.epa.gov/lead .

“Common renovation activities like sanding, cutting, and demolition can create hazardous lead dust and chips by disturbing lead-based paint, which can be harmful to adults and children.

To protect against this risk, on April 22, 2008, EPA issued a rule requiring the use of lead-safe practices and other actions aimed at preventing lead poisoning. Under the rule, beginning April 22, 2010, contractors performing renovation, repair and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in homes, child care facilities, and schools built before 1978 must be certified and must follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination.”

There are two certifiaction courses scheduled in May at Doc Savage.  Contact the local HBA office to register.
